Cooley Home
Jill was a world traveler, an artist, a designer, an eccentric, and all of these blended together in her business, the Village Corner Gift Store, and in her refurbished Bass Lake cabin.
Her eye for patterns and textures, integrated with her passion for color and whimsy, led to the creation of the Tulip House.
Her treasure trove of some forty years of collecting pages from design magazines, her unique eye for detail in the mundane, and her years of visiting the worlds gorgeous churches, mosques, plazas, and museums aged like a fine wine in her, and finally, she created, with the collaboration of other artisans, this charming home.
2015 Bass Lake Home Tour
The 2015 Bass Lake Home Tour has been postponed until September 10, 2016. The Bass Lake homeowners who planned to participate feel that with the low lake level and other issues that their homes are not as presentable as they would hope. We also want to provide value to the guests who spend money to attend the tour.
The Bass Lake Home Tour was proposed as a way for the Lions Club to continue funding its charitable activities. Proceeds from next year’s tour will benefit a deserving mountain area non-profit organization.
We are all looking forward to a terrific home tour next year!

2012 Home Tour
Was Saturday, September 8, 2012
The 7th Annual Bass Lake Home Tour took place on Saturday September 8, 2012 from 10 am to 3 pm.
An exciting addition to this year’s tour was a newly constructed home near Bass Lake Heights. There is nothing else like it anywhere in the mountains, according to its architect, Michael Karby.
The 3 story, cubist modernist residence is approximately 6,200 square feet, all white stucco, steel, and glass, and is completely solar powered. Its state of the art electronic lighting, data, sound, video, and camera system may all be controlled from an I Pad or a smart phone. The home contains a three tier home theatre with JBL audio system, a disco, a recording studio, a kitchen with all custom Italian imported appliances, a library, a full gymnasium with indoor lap pool, and an 8’x16’ glass floor in the master bedroom directly above the lap pool so you can wave at the kids in the pool below. Situated on 13 acres of stunning views, owners Mark Jarvis and Melissa Saunders added a tennis court, putting green, adult pool, and kid’s water park for year-round fun!
Proceeds from the 2012 tour benefited the Madera County Sheriff’s Office “OPERATION LOST & FOUND” Tracking System designed to find those who wander off.
Operation Lost & Found uses state of the art technology in assisting those who care for victims who suffer from short term memory loss and is 100% volunteer staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

West of the Falls
We purchased the home in early 2010 with the idea that it would be a great summer remodeling project.
Stripping out everything to the studs and concrete floor (including the windows, roofing and doors) was the first step.
With over 2900 square feet of floor area, dumpster after dumpster was filled and hauled away.
With the framing exposed, we were able to reconfigure the floor plan, adding windows, changing bedroom sizes and adding another full bath upstairs creating a mini master bedroom.
It was a really strange layout before with an interior kitchen that didn’t have any windows and access to the garage was through the bathroom.
By moving the kitchen to take in the lake view, the laundry moved inside where the kitchen was now, allowing a new access to the garage. Since the flow through traffic was eliminated from the half bath, a shower was installed allowing easy cleanup after a day at the lake.
Upstairs, the master bedroom was given a gas fireplace and large soaking tub all with endless views of the lake. When the lake is up during summer months, it is less than 8′ to the water from the back door.
Cooley Home
Jill was a longtime resident of Bass Lake.
She owned the Village Corner gift shop, and was very active in the community, participating in the Lions Club, the Chamber of Commerce, and even picked up trash along the road with other committed environmentalists.
The Tulip House was Jill’s life passion and ultimate artwork. She was trained at the San Francisco School of Fashion Design, and in the greatest school of all, travel.
She went to Europe in the late ’60’s with a knapsack on her back for 18 months. Her classrooms were the halls of every Art Museum in every city, the fields of Ireland and Scotland, the castles of Germany and Austria, the balconies and cafes of France and Spain, the Cathedrals and ruins of Greece and Italy.
Even the whimsy of children’s books, the enchantment of San Francisco’s Victoriana, and her love of the Hawaiian Islands taught her lessons in design.
All of these influences, including her love of ‘piece-work,’ or quilting, are well represented in her enchanting home.
Mike Magill, master wood artist, worked in concert with, and in competition with Jill, each improving on an idea, over and over again, until the final product barely resembled the original sketch. Jill designed most of the tile work, spending over 3 months on just the stairway risers, months and months on the Moorish bathroom.
The kitchen evolved over the 12 years. Take note of the amazing shapes she made around the stove top, and the charming work around the fireplace.
Her heart, her soul, her incredible touch, her joy, her capriciousness, her humor, her genius with color combinations, imbue this house and its visitors with a sense of awe. Jill is present here still, and always will be.

Dave & Gail Home
The Dave & Gail home in Bass Lake Estates was team-designed by Architect Michaela Mahady, the owners, and draftsman Tim Nelson.
The Arts & Crafts movement of the early 1900’s and the buildings of the national parks influenced the design process. The home is on the site of the old Ducey’s Resort and is situated on the lot to allow for a circular driveway and off-street parking which compliments the tall trees and hills of the forest.
Local builder Paul Contreras expertly constructed the house in 18 months. In most cases, natural materials are used, inside and out. The concepts of “spatial layering” and “sheltering around activities” were employed to give a cozy feel. The use of solid woods, period hardware, and art-glass lamps give an old-fashioned look. The woodwork throughout the house was crafted and installed by master finish carpenters Harry Stott and crew.
The house was designed for summer entertaining. The kitchen, deck and lawn were laid out to serve up to 80 dinner guests. These areas are in the rear of the lot, where it’s shady in the afternoon and evening.
Kerry Home
The first thing Kerry fell in love with about this home was the breathtaking wraparound view of Bass Lake.
Starting from the master bedroom, through the kitchen, dining room, onto the patio and library it is possible to take in the beautiful forest and sparkling water. Through the changing seasons the view is both calming and magnificent and is but one of the things that makes this home so special.
This masterfully designed, 4,400 square foot home feels at one homey and intimate, but also spacious and grand. Each room is more unique and charming than the last. Kerry added her own special luxurious features with a dry sauna to compliment the outdoor Jacuzzi and the deep, spacious bathtub that join the master bedroom. This is a home with large airy spaces, shaded outdoor patios and an expansive downstairs area and is a wonderful place to host an array of perfect parties or an intimate dinner.
