PG&E is excited to share significant milestones reached on the Crane Valley Dam Seismic Retrofit Project in recent months. Now 70% complete, dam construction is scheduled for completion in December 2012 with site demobilization scheduled in January 2013. Significant milestones recently achieved include:
- Downstream Dam Buttress completed on March 26
- Wishon Quarry Blasting completed on May 4
- Core Wall Improvements completed on May 12
With the busy summer recreation season starting this month, PG&E wants to keep the public informed on project activity Bass Lake visitors and residents can expect to see around the lake during May through December. The following provides details on the major ongoing construction activities.
Upstream Dredging / Upstream Dam Construction
May – December 2012
This construction will require dredging and importing rock material. Orange barriers in the lake designate the dredging construction area and the public should not approach the orange barriers. Dredging equipment is visible on the lake as well as the turbidity curtain which is in place to contain the dredging operations behind the orange barriers.
Wishon Quarry Operations/Importation of Rock Material
May – December 2012
Blasting activity concluded at the quarry in early May. However, active quarry operations continue to prepare material for the project site. Quarry trucks will continue to cross Road 222 during this time bringing material to the site. Traffic controls will periodically cause traffic delays on Road 222 to coordinate quarry truck crossing as well as trucks entering the site with imported rock material.
Site Restoration
May – December 2012
Site restoration efforts start in May in the Wishon Quarry and in other completed parts of the project. Restoration of the entire quarry and dam site will continue through the completion of the project in December.
Dam Crest Raise
August – September 2012
The Crane Valley Dam Crest will be raised 7 feet with fill material from the Wishon Quarry. During this time period, increased traffic can be expected between the quarry and the dam crest to bring fill material needed to raise the dam crest.
Summer Safety During Recreation Season
Your safety is PG&E’s top priority. For the safety of you and your family, please be careful while boating on Bass Lake near the dam construction and on Road 222 near the dam construction.
- Watch for traffic when walking adjacent to roads
- Watch for construction vehicles entering or leaving the work site
- Obey all safe boating practices and watch for shallow or submerged objects
- Do not enter construction areas and heed all warning signs
