Hello You!

With the big holiday weekend coming up, and with so much confusion on what’s open and what’s closed, you need to be updated about Yosemite and the Sierra National Forest! Below is some great info courtesy of Rhonda at Visit Yosemite | Madera County :

Yosemite : See below summary flyer that you can download.

Sierra National Forest :  See below for some updated pointers from the USFS you can download.

  • Road to Nelder Grove is closed at gate, but people are still welcome to park at gate (not drive the road up) and hike in until the end of June when Fuels Reduction Contract goes into effect and the Grove will be closed.  Use extreme caution as there are lots of downed trees and debris from the winter storms.
  • Use extreme caution near all creeks and rivers!
  • Willow Creek Trail & Lewis Creek Trail are open and mostly free of obstacles, but water levels are high and rapid.
  • The bridge is still out and Corlieu Falls viewing platform on the Lewis Creek Trail.
  • Bass Lake: Goat Mountain Trail, Spring Cove Trail and Way of the Mono Trail are open and good hiking trails.
  • Chilkoot Campground (up Beasore Road) and Summerdale Campground (off Highway 41 just before Yosemite) should be open by Memorial Day Weekend – check
  • USFS is trying to open Grey Mountain and Soquel asap.
  • USFS keeps finding more damage along Forest Roads as the snow melts. Please use caution.
  • Beasore Road – may be open to Chilkoot, if Chilkoot campground opens as expected. Otherwise, it is closed.
  • Minarets Road (out of North Fork) is closed.
  • Sky Ranch Road is open to a little past Nelder Grove turnoff.
  • Central Camp Road and Peckinpah Roads are also closed.

Here’s a great link to California’s Recreate Responsibly Water Safety information – #RecreateResponsibly | Water Safety – plus see the printable graphic on water safety below.

The Southern Yosemite Visitor Center is open 7 days a week from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Bass Lake Spillway, May 2023

As of May 17, 2023, the lake level was – 5’ 6” at an elevation of 3371’ 2”. With the runoff and snowmelt from the March storm, the tributaries are flowing and the lake continues to fill at a steady rate.

Significant amounts of melting snow are flowing down Willow Creek into Bass Lake; and more water than usual is being let out of the spillway to make room for more inflow.
